Joy in the Guild, 16th October 2007 (Leicester)

After a very pleasant drive to Leicester in very pleasant sunshine Beryl and I arrived. As usual we straight away got lost!! This city is the worst in England for finding ones way. I even studied the route beforehand and decided to take the ring road. The trouble is the signs are none existant covered by vegetation or in very much needed repainting. After a very comprehensive tour of the city we eventually found the first of only 2 signs to the racecourse. The race course is signposted better from other approaches I am told, perhaps they do not want visitors from the east!!

After parking we proceeded to the owners area where we found Jackie and Tim and later joined by Neal who was deputising for Stuart. Neal told us that Molly had travelled up well and was fine.

Just after the first race the rain started to fall though not too heavily. We had required a dry day to ensure the ground did not deteriorate for Molly's race as the going was already on the soft side of good.

After the third race the rain came down quite hard. When we entered the parade ring to join Neal it was raining really heavily. Although there had not been a change in going announcement I thought the ground was now soft.

Molly looked great, very laid back and quite switched off and ready for her race. Fergus joined us and after a brief conversation with everyone Neal helped him into the saddle. Molly went down to the start very well.

As the horses broke from the stalls Fergus settled Molly in her usual position towards the rear. At the 4 furlong pole Fergus was behind a wall of horses and ready to start his move forward. He found a way through and I think we were a little bit hopeful at this stage as Molly was going well. Regrettably the four in front were also going well. In coming in fifth I think Molly ran a very good race, there were some reasonably good class six horses behind her. In my opinion if the ground had been in her favour she would have been in the money.

In the unsaddling enclosure I was not able to hear any comments from Fergus but I am sure he was pleased with the performance, I do not think on the day he or Molly could have done better.

We as a syndicate are not being very fortunate with goings, at Newmarket the ground for Muffins effort was good to firm and Molly,s at Leicester was soft. I may be going on about the going but I do believe it does make a huge difference to some horses and that really applies to Muffin and Molly.

We stayed to support Reg's horse in the last, Dove cottage, he ran well and I thought a furlong out he would win. He finished a very game fourth, I am sure there will be a race for him soon. The same applies for Molly, perhaps a seller?

We did have one highlight as Beryl had an uncle Bert, Berts Memory won the second at 25-1, she was very pleased with her small wager.

We did not get lost on the way out of Leicester but it poured with rain all the way back to Louth.

We enjoyed the day especially the company, look forward to the next time.

Cheers, Malc.
