Joy in the Guild, 9th April, 2007 (Warwick)

This was an excellent turn out to see Molly race at Warwick on a bright sunny day. I believe there were approx 25 members/guests in attendance and it must have been the warmest and driest Easter Monday I can remember.

We all gathered outside the members bar and took in the sunshine – good job it was not raining because it must be the smallest member’s bar I have ever seen and we would have filled the place. Warwick is quite a small course but is very friendly and they had a decent crowd for the meeting. There was quite a lot of talk amongst our group about the number of Victoria Beckham wannabes and I must admit there where some very strangely dressed people there.

I think we had a few winners in the first few races and I seem to remember that Anthony had the exacta in one race and the placepot for the meeting.

Tension built leading up to Molly’s race and we all made our way into the parade ring to have a look at her. She looked very relaxed and in good shape. Fergus seemed to think she had a good chance and certainly the ground was perfect for her. He was going to hold her up as he did when she won at Warwick last year and then bring her through in the last few furlongs.

We all gathered to watch the race in a very old wooden stand and more or less took over one side of it. The race seemed to be going to plan with Molly held up but in touch with 3 furlongs to go and in a good place to attack. Coming off the bend she was in with a chance but had to kick and work through the field but nothing seemed to happen when Fergus asked her to go and she made no impression finishing about 15 lengths behind the winner in 14th place.

There was a real sense of disappointment amongst the group because I think most of us thought she had a real chance with the ground being ideal and having won on the course before. When we went back to see her after the race she was not even blowing and Fergus said that there was just nothing there when he asked her to go for it. Maybe she was just not up for it on the day or perhaps was suffering from something. I know she is not going to be a world beater but I really do think she is better than what she showed.

After the race some of us decided to go for a drink at a local pub and it must be about the worst bit of organisation ever as firstly we could not find a pub open and then we drove around for so long we lost each other.

It was great to see everyone and a special mention must go to Steve Somers who had flown all the way down from Aberdeen for the meeting – lets hope for better to come!!!
