EPSOM Racecourse

Epsom Racecourse, The Grandstand, Epsom Downs, Surrey, KT18 5LQ.

Tel: 01372-726311

From the Derby start at the top of the Downs, the course climbs steadily for the first gently-bending four furlongs, then levels out for nearly two furlongs before falling sharply round the bend to Tattenham Corner and into the straight. This is of less than four furlongs and ends with a fairish rise of just over a furlong to the winning post. The City and Suburban course and the Epsom Mile are, respectively, the last 1m 2f 15y and the last 1m 110y of the Derby course. The five furlong course (Egmont Course) is perfectly straight and, running sharply downhill to the junction with the round course, is the fastest in the world. The Derby course is a unique test for the thoroughbred, the frequently fast early pace demanding stamina, and the bends and gradients calling for a faultless action. Well-balanced, medium-sized, handy sorts seem to do best over five furlongs.

By Road: 2 miles South of the town on the B290 (M25 junction 8 and 9).

By Rail: Epsom, Epsom Downs or Tatterham Corner Stations (trains from London Bridge, Waterloo, Victoria). Regular bus services run to the course from Epsom and Morden Underground Station.
